Questions & Answers 

Here are some of the most common questions asked by people considering joining the Nyack fire service. 

 

Q: How do I get started? 

A: Its simple, start by filling out an application and submitting it during the Co monthly meeting.

 

Q: How Long is the training? 

A: The basic NYS Firefighter certification is roughly 3 months long, usually 2-3 nights a week during the evening and possibly 1 day during the weekend.

 

Q: Is anyone paid?

A: No, the entire department and even the county is all volunteer. There are opportunities to get paid during standbys for a natural disaster such as a snowstorm or hurricane as well as some benefits! 

 

Q: How long are the shifts? 

A: There are no shifts in NFD, all active members are on call 24/7, members can pick and choose the calls they want to respond to. 

 

Q: How long does it take to get in?  

A: During the Co meeting you become a Co member the same night as your application is accepted, it takes on average 2-3 months to get cleared to be able to respond to calls. 

 

Q: Do I need a lot of free time to?

A: No, many members have full-time jobs as well as families, we ask that you make at least one drill a week and respond to as many calls as your schedule permits. NYS Firefighter1 will be the longest certification you will take. 

 

Q: Will being a volunteer Firefighter help my resume? 

A: Of course. Along with the training and skills you will develop; becoming a firefighter will make you stand out against the competition.

 

A: Do I have to go inside a burning building?

Q: Only if you're comfortable and willing. 

 

A: If  I choose not to go inside a building can I still help? 

Q: Yes, there is just as much work to be done outside as there is inside. 

 

Q: what happens if I get injured during an incident?

A: You are completely covered by the department's insurance. If you have to miss time at work you will be compensated.

 

Q: Can I back out of the application process while it's going on?  

A: Yes, you can pull your application out at any time, there is zero commitment. 

 

Q: Are the skills I learn in the fire service useful elsewhere?  

A: Yes, You'll be able to recognize dangerous situations and act safely and confidently much quicker than the average civilian, you will also become a great problem solver and a leader.

 

Q: What happens if I miss the truck when a call comes in?

A: All members are able to drive directly to a scene in Nyack Fire Departments jurisdiction 

 

Q: Will I be able to help people?  

A: Yes, that is what the whole service is about, on top of that you'll be giving back to your community.
